After fifteen years of debating, planning, and waiting for just the right time, yesterday we adopted a dog. She's a half-grown Lab/hound mix named Annie. For Little Orphan Annie, the orphan that everyone adored. And it's hard not to adore this Annie, she's so sweet and loving. She's black as black can be, with just the littlest smears of white on her chest and a the veriest tips of her hind paws, and she has chocolate brown eyes. She weighs about 40 pounds now, so I hope she doesn't get much bigger. Of course Himself thinks a proper dog is one that you can saddle and ride like a pony so he'd be happy if she never stopped growing.
Even Puck and Sophie are are finding it hard to actually dislike her. Sophie has adopted the kind profound disinterest that only cats are capable of. Himself says she's become citsonga. That's agnostic backwards, it means she's not sure yet she believes in Dog. Puck's tail puffed up like a raccoons at their first encounter but that was the only sign of alarm or hostility, and Annie's been fostered with a family who has cats so she knows enough to mind her manners around him. I'm hoping they become friends, I think Puck has always missed having a snuggle buddy.
Annie's not the little lap baby I was longing for, but she's very dear and I think she'll fit in beautifully with us.
